In a period in which the myth of Classic Art was to be revived, Raphael embodied the artistic ideals and trends of the 15th century humanistic tradition. He absorbed the classical world more deeply than the others; he added the grace of Umbrian mysticism and the Florentine plastic or spatial scanning to his art, thus reaching Leonardo’s soft and secret shading and Michelangelo’s magnificent impetus. His pictorial adventure lasts just over twenty years, but it is among the most admirable ones for intelligence and poetry.
